Karis sighed as she left Gamestop and headed toward the food court in the mall. It was her lunch break and she walked, smile in place on her lips. Her hot pink skinny jeans and her bright pink shirt allowed her to rather stand out in the crowds. She was especially pink today. She smiled at a group as she passed who cast her some rather disapproving looks. Karis really honestly did not care. She was who she was and haters could suck her left pinky toe! She finally got to subway and smiled as she stepped up to place her order. She ordered two foot long subs and smiled as the guy behind the counter stared at her oddly. She was tiny...and ordering two big a** subs. She simply giggled and payed for the food before heading off back into the mall. She was heading for a larger store than hers. An actual department store. She finally reached Macy's and smiled as she headed back toward the shoes. She saw who she was looking for before he probably even realized she was coming. She wrapped her arm around his shoulders (a difficult task for the nearly midget sized girl) and placed a playful kiss on his cheek. "Ello Haven, my dear!" she said with a giggle. She sighed and held out the bag with his sandwitch in it. "It's lunch time." she said, rather innocently and adorably. The girl had a habit of buying him lunch and bringing it to him when they had the same shift. She rather enjoyed his company. This was the longest day Haven had ever had at work. Ten long hours. Straight. Only four more left to go....
Sighing slowly, the boy pulled down a box of shoes from a higher shelf and handed them to a small girl. "Here you go sweety. Tell your mommy your size is a seven, okay?" He watched the small female scamper off before turning back to what he was doing before. Sitting behind a counter and putting security tags on all of the new shoes. Quite possibly the most boring job right here. At least it paid well....
As he so often tended to do, Haven found himself drifting off into a mindless zombie-like state. He didn't watch the time or notice anything besides his work. Unless someone came up to him directly, he would remain just going through these motions. Unbox, remove all tissue paper, put on pin, affix tag through pin, attatch ink tag. Repeat. Just like a stupid shampoo bottle.... But with a million times more steps. Fun.
It wasn't until one-thirty rolled around that this daze was broken. A burst of pink swam into the junior's vision. He blinked for a moment, trying to fixate on who was in front of him. Then it all came towards him in a wave. First was the face. Karis, of course. No one else would stop by to see him at work wearing that type of outfit. Or stop by at all.
The second thing Haven noticed was the smell. Oh, God, that smell! It was heaven in the form of toasted bread and fresh veggies. He nearly let out a dark moan as he was pulled into a tight and semi-awkward hug. Then a kiss on the cheek prevented him from grabbing the food. Man, was he starving. “Kari, gimme the food. Now.” He grabbed the bag that was warm and began walking briskly towards his break room. “C’mon, I gotta clock out. Then we can go eat at Smoker’s Corner.” Three stone benches out in the warm sun never seemed so damn inviting. “Thanks, by the way. You’re heaven, darling.” Suddenly remembering his manners, the boy reached back for his friend’s hand. He gripped it with a tender smile, then spoke into his walkie to let his manager know he was taking lunch.

Karis grinned at Haven as he essentially demanded that she hand over his food. She giggled and released the bag into his grip. She listened to his voice, a voice that she could honestly listen to all day, and continued to stand there, her usual smile on her petite face. She nodded as he began to walk away and his words let her know to follow him. And so her feet, tiny like the rest of her body, began to move and she followed him. As he thanked her and referred to her as heaven, she blushed ever so lightly. The blush still coloring her rather white face significantly.
As he reached back and grabbed her hand she smiled at him, waiting until he looked away before biting her lip. Yes, of course to him, this was just a friendly gesture. However, to the young woman, she wished it was more. She watched him grab his walkie and talk to his manager and smiled. He was so cute...all professional like.
She smiled up at him before using her other hand to remove her Gamestop I.D tag from around her neck, an awkward task seeing as how that hand also gripped her sub in it. She giggled and stuffed the I.D in her pocket, leaving the lanyard hanging out of her pocket and down her leg. It shockingly just enhanced her outfit more. She chuckled and playfully swung Haven's arm back and forth with hers as they walked.
"So Haven my dear. What have you been up to?" she asked happily, glad to be out of the store and with him instead. The girl LOVED video games and her job at Gamestop but she rather missed her friends. She worked so much that she rarely saw them. She smiled. "You should sell me some shoes." she teased, one hundred percent jokingly as she looked down at her tattered old skate shoes. Macy's wouldn't sell the types of shoes Karis wore. You couldn't rock heels at a skate park unless you were a total tramp.
She sighed. "You should come over tonight and fire up the xbox with me." she said in all seriousness and totally out of the blue. She smiled and stared up at him. "Pretty please?!" she begged with a cute child-like tug on his hand. Much like a child would do if they were begging their mommy for that new toy. there be her outfit mate

The moment they reached the break room, Haven punched in the access code and planted Karis in front of the door to keep it from closing. He half listened to what she side, grabbing all of his things from his locker and punching out. The last thing he swiped were two sodas from his twelve pack in the fridge. Then they were all set to go. It was at this point he began to go back over what his friend had been rambling about. She sure was a chatter box. But often times that's what he loved about her most. When he had nothing to say and no hope in the world, this girl would pop up and just ramble on about God knows what. It was refreshing to hear someone just speaking. Someone that he actually wanted to hear, at least.
A smile was slowing creeping up onto the boy’s face while they took an exit from just outside Macy’s to the bright shining day outside. It was so nice out. The perfect day to take Krista swimming.... She really would have enjoyed that. Maybe they could still go to the community center and swim when he got off work. And after he paid a few bills and things. It depended on how much money was in his account when he returned home.
These negative thoughts needed to be visibly shook from Haven’s mind. He rattled his brain a bit, then looked over at Karis. She was still expecting answers. As they were quickly coming up on the three stone benches to the side of the mall known as “Smoker’s Corner”, he pulled an ID case from his pocket. Inside, however, were about ten cigarettes just waiting for him to puff down on. Another item, a specialized zippo, was also emerging into the open. While still trying to hold his sandwich, he raised a thin stick up to his lips and pulled in while flicking open the lighter. A fresh wave on nicotine filled his lungs, causing all worries to melt away. Now he was ready to relax. “Okay, first, one question at a time, Kari. You’re losing me and my zombie brain.” His arm snaked out to grab ahold of her waist for a small hug. Then he began answering her questions. “Uh, I’ve been working my a** off. And trying to deal with Krista’s birthday plans all by myself. It’s hard planning a party for a thirteen-year-old girl when I myself went through male puberty. Second, I’ll sell you some hooker heels. You can be my date to homecoming this year. Maybe you’ll even win queen if your dress is short enough. Let’s talk.” Haven’s eyes twinkled as he laughed off what he’d just said. Right, like he’d ever want to go to homecoming. Boring.
“And, finally, we’ll see. I don’t know if I can. I mean...I’ll talk to Kris and see if she wants to come over. She’ll probably say ‘yes’, though. Anything to get out of the house.” They never really wanted to be home at night. It was like waiting for a neverending b**** fest. Any excuse to get away was welcomed, really. “We’ll see,” he concluded before taking a seat in the semi-shade and pulling open his bag.

Karis watched as Haven punched in the access code to his break room and squeaked in surprise as she was placed in front of the door much like one would place a chair to keep the door from closing. She folded her arms over her chest for a brief moment as if she were going to throw a tantrum but smiled and leaned against the door instead, simply watching him. Gamestop didn't have this sort of break room...then again, Gamestop wasn't as big a store as Macy's.
The whole time while Karis was thinking about all of this, she was still just yapping away. Her mouth working on over drive to get all of her thoughts out of her head. She often times didn't realize how much she was rambling on but it was a good thing she did most times. If she kept half her thoughts in her head, her brain would probably explode! However, she assumed Haven didn't mind her constant talking seeing as how he had kept her around. Maybe it was because her constant chatter wasn't all about her? Kari wasn't one of those girls who always had to talk about herself. Often times she was inquiring about the other person...Like now!
As soon as they got outside, Karis smiled wider at the sun shining on her face. She loved it. The warmth of the sun was amazing. It caused a small laugh to leave her lips as she closed her eyes and tilted her head back, simply soaking up the rays.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Haven shake his head out the corner of them. She didn't know what he shook his head at. She wouldn't ask. His business was his business. She never really pried. He knew she was there to talk if he ever needed it...at least, she hoped he knew that. She watched him light a cigarette and didn't really show any emotion to it. She didn't smoke. However she never passed judgement on those who did...especially not someone so close to her.
She giggled at his comment about her losing him as he brought her into a hug. She loved his hugs. Then he set into answering her questions. She nodded at his first answer. She knew how it was to always have to work. The girl had been living on her own for a while now. She smiled as he mentioned his sister though. Karis absolutely adored Krista. She squealed out in approval and excitement. "Oh I'm sure it will be great!" she said with a big nod as she bounced lightly as she sat. "Either way she'll know she has the best big brother ever." she said with a nod, and with that she took a big bite of her sub.
His mention of selling her hooker heels almost made her choke on her food and she stared up at him, her eyes big as she finished chewing and swallowed her food. "Heels? Dress?" she stuttered out. "Whats wrong with going like this?!" she protested. She was entirely kidding. She actually already had been searching for a dress. She laughed. I'm kidding darling. You can sell me some "hooker heels" if you wish as long as you don't mind watching me try to learn how to walk in them." she laughed, her mind constantly wondering if he was serious about her being his homecoming date.
And her final question. She smiled. Karis would love to have Kris over. As said before, the junior adored Haven's little sister. "Well I hope you two come over." she said with a smile. It would mean she wouldn't be all alone tonight. She hated being alone in that house. She giggled. "Some day maybe we can even have a sleepover!" she said, half teasing but in all seriousness.

The moment the food hit Haven’s tongue, he let out another groan and let his head dangle back happily. Without even managing to chew properly, he swallowed. Then he looked over at Karis with a bashful smile. Okay, so sometimes he got carried away. But working forty hours a week took its toll. And when he got the chance to eat a good meal, man it just felt good. Something like an orgasm. Only a little more satisfying....
The boy nodded as he listened and multitasked eating with smoking. It was quite hard, actually. He couldn’t really decide whether he wanted to fill his lungs with nicotine or his stomach with vegetables. Being a vegetarian, he was overloaded with lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, olives and of course mayo. The only thing better than this was candy. Oh, God, he could go for some chocolate right now.
About halfway through his sub now, Haven put out the butt of his cigarette. He looked up at his friend and couldn’t help but to smile. She looked so nice and happy. And her confidence was refreshing. Of course Krista would enjoy her party, no matter what he did. She was always so grateful what he could do, even if it wasn’t exactly perfect. “So far, I think it’s just going to be us going to the mall with her friends for an afternoon. Maybe you can come along. Keep me company amongst those little girls.” It would be nice not to be so alone. And he rather liked shopping with Kari. She had good taste in fashion. And convinced him to not buy that bright orange winter coat last year. That would’ve been the biggest mistake of his life.
All this talk of homecoming was starting to dampen the mood a little bit. He wrinkled his nose, and then shook his head at the girl across from him. Those stupid high school normalcies got him down for some reason. Probably because he never had a date to those dumb dances. And when he wanted to just go with friends, his mother would choose that night to act up. He didn’t get normal. That was for people like the queen bees and jocks. People who didn’t have a care in the world besides who slept with whom. “Karis....” He just couldn’t burst her little imagination bubble. So with a resigned sigh, he smiled gently nodded. “Maybe I’ll even learn to walk in them with you.” He wished he could make promises like this.
Haven was one of those men who liked to live in the moment. He liked the last topic they were on better. “Yes, maybe. I don’t have work in the morning. We could do it tonight? Mother’s going to the bar so...I’d rather not see what sap she brings home anyway.” Karis was one of the only people who knew the extent of the Monroe kids’ home life. He didn’t feel the need to even hold back with her. She was always so supportive.

Karis giggled lightly as Haven rather awkwardly enjoyed his food. She smiled widely as him as grinned bashfully at her. He was too cute! She reached her hand out and poked his knee. "You are adorable Haven, my dear!" she teased happily. She loved her best friend. He could always bring a smile to her face. Okay, she was always smiling anyway. But he could bring a BIGGER smile to her face. He was the closest thing she really had to family right now.
She looked up at him as he smiled. He had the prettiest smile and she loved it, even if she didn't see it as much as she liked. She nodded at his suggestion and giggled. "That sounds fun! Of course darling!" she said, nibbling lightly at her food. She never ate the whole sub and now, barely able to finish the first half of it, she was rather full. She sighed and rubbed her tummy as she giggled. "Provided...that Krista doesn't mind me tagging along." she said with a wink.
As they talked about homecoming though, she could feel his mood deflating and the picked up her sandwitch, eating dispite her fullness to pass the awkward feeling she felt. The way he said her name troubled her and she stared up at him, her blue eyes bearing deep into his. She knew there was trouble behind his voice as he joked with her about learning to walk in heels with her. However she didn't push into it. She knew he was trying to keep her smiling so she granted it and smiled. Karis knew he meant well.
Karis's smile grew ten times wider as Haven suggested sleeping over tonight. "That would be great!" she mused happily. "I'd love to have you two over!" she said with a giggle. Karis knew Haven and Krista didn't have a good home life...however she had no idea how bad off he really had it. She just knew she'd love to have him over.

In his life, Haven had been called many things. Faggot, dumbass, bastard, worthless prat, shithead, son of a b****.... But he couldn’t exactly recall ‘adorable’ being one of them. He looked up at Karis with a puzzled expression. Like he must have heard her wrong. What was so ‘adorable’ about him, exactly? He was eating like a little pig. If anything, it was quite disgusting and rather pathetic. In response, he merely rolled his eyes and tugged at the finger that was poking his knee. “Oh, hush you. I think you meant to call me revolting? Or weird. Not adorable.” He snorted and continued to eat. This time, however, he did it with a little more grace. Quite the opposite of his friend, he was nearly finished with his sandwich and wasn’t even close to being full. That’s what skipping breakfast and dinner the night before did to a person.
Though details still needed to be hammered out with his sister, the boy was quite excited for the party he was planning. Krista often-times got spoiled by her brother. She was still young and had a chance for a good life if he worked hard enough. For this reason, he gave her the world. As much as he could, that is, with their parents being as they were. “As long as you bring her a present that’s not Barbie’s, I think she’ll be happy to have you around. You know, I asked our mother what she was planning to get Kris for her birthday. She told me to pick up a f***ing Barbie dream house. She thinks that her daughter is turning ten. Ten! She’s like three whole f***ing years off the mark. Such an idiot....” He was glad to have someone to rant to, even if it ruined the mood a bit. All he wanted was one moment to get this off his chest. And now that he had, he felt like he could sit back and just relax for a moment. And just as he felt like he could, he was falling backwards onto his butt.
Oh, right, stone benches didn’t have backs....
Blushing up a storm, Haven hurried to save his sandwich from the ground and sat up. His hair was in his face and dirt was smeared over his standard black uniform. “Fuckin’ a’! A family with two young children walking by turned to look at him with glares. He silently flipped them off, humiliated, before attempting to pull himself up onto the bench again. Except he wasn’t really one for balance and fell once more.
