RAWR IMMA DINOSAUR (a pic should be here but I'm too lazy to go find one. ^^) - - - - - - - - - - She kept running, it was like she couldn't stop. She was trying to catch up with the car that Haven sat in. Why was he leaving her?! He promised he'd never leave! She tried to pick up speed but the car was still faster. Her tears blinded her and she fell, rolling down a grassy incline. At the end of the hill was her mother, a smile plastered on her fake face and a bottle of pepsi in her raised hand. "Come on, Krissy Cat! We're all waiting for you." Her mother laughed, and beckoned her over. Behind her mother was a happy looking man, her father, who was tossing a football with Haven. As she started walking it all went down hill. The pepsi turned to booze, the foot ball to a knife and a happy Haven turned into a dying one. She screamed.
Krista sat up panting, sleep induced tears drying on her cheeks and she quickly wiped them away. God she hated that dream, at first it had just been her chasing down a car that Haven was leaving in. Now some messed up picnic? It was like Anastasia's dream when she was on the boat and jumped off. She threw the covers back, and got off her bed, fixing her short pj shorts and not even bothering to pull down her tank top, it would just rise up again.
She pulled her hair out of its pony tail, happy it didn't friz up while she was sleep and walked out of her room, only to be greeted by the door to her mother's room being open and showing her the woman she very rarely saw. Krista walked into the room, taking in the scene of a thin woman in her bra and underwear who had fallen asleep sitting up and still had a bottle of booze in her hand. Pathetic she thought.
Against her better judgment to just leave the woman how she was, Krista took the booze and set it down and pulled back the covers. She checked to make sure she was still asleep before lifting her legs onto the bed and tucking her in. Krista kissed her mother's forehead, grabbed the bottle of booze and left, closing the door tightly as she left the room.
The family was lucky, they each had their own bedroom but because of that they shared a small bathroom that was covered in their moms s***. Krista quietly checked on her brother, knowing it was his Saturday off and went and tucked him in as well. Haven's room was cold to her so she picked the blanket up off the floor and covered him up, kissed his forehead as well and left with the door closed behind her. She couldn't do much to help him, being she was only 13, so Krista opted to tuck him in whenever he was asleep and she was up, to clean when she had time and just make-sure he didn't work himself sick.
The kitchen of the apartment was small but clean so Krista set to work. She might as well make breakfast, knowing only her and Haven would eat it because her mother probably just got home an hour ago, it was ten in the morning, and she probably wouldn't get up until 3 or 4 when she would expect something to eat and then leave to go drinking again. Krista grumbled to herself as she got out the instant pancake mix and some chocolate chips. Sure, you have money to waist on booze but not to buy damn groceries... Biztich.
Krista opened the fridge to find the milk and quickly slammed it shut. Damnit! No damn milk. Seriously?! There was milk there last night, right? Krista couldn't really remember but whatever, it was annoying her. She was seriously in a pissed off mood right now and all because she saw her mother this morning. Sure she loved her on default but for some reason seeing her like that just set her off. She looked over a the half empty bottle of some fruity flavored vodka and picked it up. "So this is what you buy? That woman..." She quickly poured out the contents of the bottle and dropped the glass into the garbage.
Krista quickly went to her room, threw on a pair of tight, light jeans with holes in the knees, a pair of flip flops and a hoodie, brushed out her hair and went to her piggy bank. To say the least, Krista never really brought in much money. She babysat for anyone who needed it, mowed lawns and raked leaves and shoveled snow. But lately she hadn't done diddly squat so she only had five dollars left in her piggy bank. She took the five and quickly wrote on a post-it note. Went to go get some milk. Be back. I WILL COOK BREAKFAST WHEN I GET BACK. NOT YOU! <3 Krista
She posted the note on the inside of Haven's door so he saw it when he got up and left the apartment, going down the street to the corner store that she spent many hours at with whoever she was hanging out with at the time. she hurried to the dairy, picked up a carton of milk and went to pay, grabbing a box of mini donuts on the way and payed. Krista really hoped Haven didn't get upset that she just left without waking him up or something, though she was sure he trusted her not to talk to strangers and to look both ways before crossing. He was the one who pretty much raised her anyway.

It was a rare Saturday when Haven didn't have to work. And those days were ones that he enjoyed. He slept in as late as his body would let him, which honestly was only about ten in the morning. But, still, that was much better than four in the morning. Today was really no exception to that seldom routine. With no dreams and no interruptions, he was sleeping soundly since midnight the night before. Well...except for when the front door had slammed shut at about eight. The vibrations of it had sent a picture from his wall crashing down onto his head. Of course, mother couldn't come home in a polite way.... At the time, he just shrugged it off. After all, this was his day off. He deserved to be able to rest for a little bit longer before dealing with that woman, right? So, with a bump swelling on his eyebrow, he merely rolled over and fell back asleep.
Though he felt bad for abandoning Krista for a couple hours, the boy really needed his sleep. He had been working all week. If he didn't take a moment to rest here and there, he would honestly go crazy. His sister could handle herself for just a little while. She was a smart girl.
When Haven decided it was about time to get up and start the day, he once more heard the door. It opened, then closed. But this time it was softer. Krista was either leaving or coming back from somewhere. With a frown set into his groggy features, he sat up and rubbed at his eyes. A little dab of old eyeliner came off with a goop of sleep, causing him to wrinkle his nose. After wiping it off on his bedspread, the boy got up and looked at himself in the dirty, cracked mirror over his dresser. There were deep bags under his eyes, outlined by day-old makeup. Along with this, his hair was quite disheveled from the hairspray yesterday. It stood in many different directions. Not exactly the new fashion statement. A groan pushed past his lips and he attempted to run a brush through snarls. After getting stuck about five times, he finally got it to lay flat. That was a little better.
Before he decided to venture out into the house, the boy threw on clean clothes. Though he wasn't really up to showering just yet, he at least should smell better than sleep. Now dressed in a tank, shorts and flip-flops, he finally decided to go out to see the world. A world that he really didn't think he was up for quite yet. It was as he was about to open his door that he found the note. After reading it over, a smile split his face. That girl was...indescribable. But he supposed he could let her make breakfast this once. It was a sweet gesture. Opening the door, he stepped out into the hall. From where it stood in the apartment, he had to walk past his mother's bedroom to get to the kitchen. The door was closed, but he stopped for a peek. Just to see if she was really there. Of course, she was. Passed out, laying under the covers for once. Though the smell of stale alcohol told him she probably didn't do that herself. Krista had already been in here.
Haven sighed, closing the door once more. A tension was settling in his shoulders as he continued on his path to the front part of the apartment. Everything was clean. Krista was going to make breakfast. He had no work today. And of course he had no homework, since it was summer. Honestly, he had no idea what to do with himself right now. Could he really just relax a more today? That wasn't something he was used to. Sitting slowly in the broken down easy chair in the living room, he reached over and grabbed his pack of cigarettes. After lighting one up, he flicked on the television to one of the music channels. Music videos kept him interested at least. Gave him something to do with his time right now. Even though he still felt as if he was wasting it. When had Kris left? Hopefully she would be back soon.

- - - - - - - - - - Walking out of the gas-n-shop store, Krista was greated by an all too familiar sight. Her mother’s drunkin’ friends. pigs… Without a world, since they were in her way, she opted to go the long way, talking to them wouldn’t really make her day any better. What were they doing out anyway, didn’t the bright morning sun melt them or something? Or was that vampires? Either way, mom and her friends were on about the same level as a make believe vampire named Warg. Yes… Warg. What a fine name.
A giggle passed Krista’s lips as she thought of this Warg. Maybe she could draw him after she made breakfast for Sally Sunshine. The long was home from the store meant about a ten minute walk instead of the usual five and having to go all the way around the block to get home. Haven could wait, he’d understand. And anyway, this way she could possibly run into one of the losers she loved to hang with all the time. They were like stoup monkeys; Krista could always find one or all of them on someone’s stoup. And as for the ones who didn’t come out until later, she considered them Cellar Dwellers.
Krista passed other apartments and people but all she saw was what she normally saw. Children who looked like they needed showers, parents who needed to go on diets, pregnant teenagers with their no good sperm donors and then there was Pete. Unlike most people, Krista actually liked the old man. Unlike what everyone thought, he was just lonely and had a bad hip so that weird way he walks wasn’t from being drunk at all. He was really a sweet old man; she gave him a dollar whenever she could. Yes her family needed money but she knew a dollar wouldn’t make a difference, maybe it would to the homeless man everyone shunned though.
“Mornin’ miss Krista.” Krista smiled at him as he walked beside her, his bike he held up at his side. It was kind-of sad knowing a bike, a blanket and a change of clothes was all Pete had. His voice almost sounded as if it was lost in his throat, quiet and gravely. She always wondered how he came to be homeless, but for some reason, she was scared to know the answer.
”Mornin’, Pete. Hey, Pete, wanna answer a kind-of personal question for me?” But thinking about it now, it was gnawing at her insides. Did he drink away his money; did his family kick him out? It was scary to think that maybe one day Jeanne will have drunken away all the money and it wouldn’t just be Pete alone outside. Could she and Haven really face her when they saw her scrounging through garbage cans?
Question man nodded. ”No need to ask dear. It’s actually really simple. My wife left me, taking the money, house and kids. No family of mine would help me so this is how I ended up. But don’t worry miss Krista, I’m sure you’d never end up like me.” When he finished talking it was like he was giving Krista a moment to let it sink in before hoping on his bike. ”This is your stop, I’ll see you later.” He rode off and Krista stood there, looking up at the apartment building, wondering if her mother could take everything and kick Haven and her out. Was she allowed to do that?
She walked to stairs up to the house and let herself in, not checking the living room to see if Haven had finally gotten up to face the day. She set the stuff on the counter, took off her hoodie and tossed it around the corner and down the hall towards her room; she’d pick it up later. Finally Krista looked towards the living room, putting on a smile and grabbed the donuts, Haven was awake. ”Catch!” she tossed the six pack of chocolate covered mini donuts towards him and smiled. ”Morning glory, sleep well?”
While Krista waited for his answer, she turned back to the stuff she had gotten out earlier and the milk. She then swore under her breath. Was it milk or water you needed to make chocolate chip pancakes? ugh… Dumb me. She quickly read the back and smiled, it needed milk. Thank Warg that trip wasn’t wasted. Krista set to work stirring in the stuff and placing a pan on the stove on medium heat, after she stirred out these annoying lumps they’d have pancakes in no time. Winning.

When Krista didn't return right away, her brother started to worry a bit. The store was maybe five minutes away. They lived in a part of town where they could really just walk anywhere. For this they were really grateful. It was rather convenient and cut down costs for gas, too. But it also meant they knew just about when each other should be home. And if Kris had left when he was getting up, she should be back by now. The fact that she wasn't was a little bit worrying.
After finishing his cigarette, Haven reached over to put it out in the ashtray. A video for some rock band he'd never heard of way playing on the television. It was actually pretty good, though. He rather liked it. With the extra time on his hands, he decided to look this Kill Hannah up further on the computer. It was a short walk from the easy chair to the desktop computer. In fact, it took longer to boot the damn thing up than it did to get over to it. Their computer was ancient. It was a 1995 version, attempting to run right with windows vista. It just didn't work. What was worse was their internet. The cheapest, slowest version was all they could afford. And their modem was awful, too. It was broken and shoddy. But, again, that was all they could afford.
After five minutes of waiting for the computer to be ready to go, he was finally on the internet. The first thing that popped up was the Facebook homepage. He contemplated checking his messages and things, but thought better of it. For the moment he was only on here to do check this band out. Krista would be home soon. Then they would be eating breakfast and then...well, then he wasn't sure. Hopefully they could do something out of the house. When their mother woke up later.... Well, it wouldn't be pleasant. Maybe they could go hang out at Karis' or something. Swimming could be fun, too.
As he was just starting to open a YouTube video of the band, the door opened. Haven turned to watch Krista coming in and going straight for the kitchen. She didn’t even stop to look at him. Just set her things down and threw her jacket into the hallway. He made a face to her, letting her know that wasn’t acceptable. They worked hard to keep this apartment clean. Throwing things around randomly was going to help them keep it that way. But he forgot all about it as he was tossed a package of donuts. A grin crossed his features and he hurried to open up the box. The sight of these delicious pastries made his stomach growl. “Gee, thanks, Kris. I, uh...slept well, I guess. Got in kinda late.” He turned further back towards the computer screen to hide his uncomfortable blush. The reasons for being late were not exactly admirable. But it had earned him an extra thirty dollars. That would pay for the damn internet at least. He popped a chocolate covered donut into his mouth, then preoccupied himself with chewing.
“Whatcha makin’?” He asked after a moment and stood up, crossing to the kitchen. Chocolate chips and pancake mix. He smiled gently and kissed the top of his sister’s head sweetly. “Ooh, pancakes. Delish, sis.” Haven looked a moment between the donuts and the milk, frowning. Where had she gotten the money for this? “Krissy, you don’t gotta use your money for groceries. How many times have I said that? I’ve always got a couple bucks in my wallet.” He pulled said wallet out of his back pocket and set a five dollar bill down next to her. “Just remember that for next time.”

RAWR IMMA DINOSAUR - - - - - - - - - - Krista looked at the five on the table and growled slightly. ”No. I could have woken you up to ask for money but I chose not to.” She grabbed the money and put it in his pocket and turned back to stirring. She hated stirring because it was way too tedious to sit there and stir out all the lumps. Finally she gave up and dropped some butter into the pan, spread it about and put about two circles on opposite sides of the pan.
Slowly she turned to Haven. ”And anyway, it was only a few dollars. It’s not like I bought a bunch of groceries.” Sometimes Krista hated how nice he was, yeah it was awesome to know he would give her money to get stuff like milk but seriously? It wasn’t that much and he didn’t need to pay her back because she used the milk too. As Krista watched the pancakes she noticed she never put the chocolate chips and growled, quickly tossing in a handful on top of each. She then put some in the batter and handed Haven the stuff. ”Stir this. I need to take care of meh hoodie.
Carefully she maneuvered around him and down the hall where she grabbed the hoodie and walked into her room. She set the hoodie over her bed and turned only let her eyes catch such an old picture. The last time she saw her mother and father smile and when Haven and their mother got along. Slowly and careful Krista pulled the picture off the wall and stared at it. It upset her, seeing such an old picture with them all having such happy looks. Life definitely isn’t fair… For anyone in this house. It was true. Haven had to take care of them, Jeanne got kids who resented her and Krista just felt stuck in the middle of a war that didn’t exist. She loved them both, Haven more than her own mother and it bothered her. Why couldn’t they be like a normal family? A mother and father to support the family, a brother to protect her but fight with her as well.
Stop, be grateful. Krista scolded herself, placed the picture back and headed back into the kitchen, going back to the spot she had originally left. She flipped the pancakes and took back the batter and set it back on the table, grinning at Haven before repeating the process of placing the pancakes on a place and them cooking more.
